Book Review – JUST LIKE MOTHER by Anne Heltzel

One of my favorite book covers in 2022 by far. I love the simplicity of the design. The colors are gorgeous and the small details in it is done so well.

This was one of my anticipated reads of the year so after reading it I thought it was okay.

JUST LIKE MOTHER is about cousins who reunite after being separated as children. They were raised in a cult and suffered quite a bit of trauma. Once they meet up again and weird stuff begins to happen.

The story bounces back and forth between the present time and the past. It was creepy and wild but overall I was a bit underwhelmed. I am typically not the biggest fan of cult fiction so I’m not surprised that those elements didn’t keep me that interested. I found it to be a bit predictable and wasn’t that shocked by the ending–I’m not sure what was missing for me.

So overall it was down the middle. It had it’s creepy atmosphere and thrilling moments but there were moments where it was TOO unbelievable. This tackles subjects of fertility, control, body autonomy and trauma. There are content warnings so look them up.
